A perfect place to drop anchor while sailing the Whitsundays is Whitehaven Beach. This untouched expanse of white sand, framed by crystal blue water stretches over 9km along the south-eastern side of Whitsunday Island. Perfectly pristine and uninhabited it does have lovely bush walks and many camping grounds scattered over the island.
Whitehaven is listed as the most beautiful beach in Australia and possibly the world. Approximately 109sq km with a peak of 438m, Whitsunday Island is the longest of all neighbouring islands. Whitehaven is easily accessible by water, or for something a little different, try dropping in by sea plane or helicopter for a special day trip.
Whether you are based at Hayman Island, Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island, Brampton Island or Daydream there is a tour to get you there. Overnight sailing charters also leave from Shute Harbour. There are many National Parks with camping grounds on Whitsunday Island with a limited amount of permits issued at Whitehaven, Dugong Beach, Joe's Beach, Turtle Bay and other sites on the western side.
Many cruises and charter boat companies visit Whitehaven Beach on their itinerary. Sailing the Whitsundays in your own private charter is another fantastic way to explore this natural phenomenon, anchor offshore and stay for as little or as long as you like. Jump ashore, then sail away to another island.
Take advantage of the great dive sites on the Great Barrier Reef. Many dive cruises travel to the outer reefs. The superb location of Whitehaven Beach allows for stunning day trips, snorkelling, camping, kite flying, picnics or swimming.
